Vodka Types

40% abv vs. 37.5% abv - Alcohol Content

Vodkas can be classed in a number of ways. The most common is by alcohol content. In Eastern European countries, sometimes known as The Vodka Belt, the standard alcohol content is 40%. While in Western European countries it tends to be 37.5%.

The reason for the lower level is excise tax. In Western European countries, the higher the alcohol, the higher the excise tax rate.

Clear vs. Flavoured

Apart from the alcoholic content, vodkas may be classified into two main groups: clear vodkas and flavoured vodkas. An example of clear vodka is our Graduate Vodka.

As the name suggests there is no colour present. While most vodkas are unflavoured, many flavoured vodkas have been produced in traditional vodka-drinking areas, often as home-made recipes to improve vodka's taste or for medicinal purposes. Flavourings include red pepper, ginger, fruit flavors, vanilla, chocolate (without sweetener), and cinnamon.
